Irving Berlin’s storied Manhattan penthouse sells for a song

The former duplex penthouse of legendary songwriter Irving Berlin is finally in contract — for a quarter of its original asking price.

The Upper East Side home at 130 East End Ave. was asking $7.9 million in 2017 — but just $2.32 million most recently. (It still comes with the same $7,774 a month maintenance fee.) Irving, who wrote everything from “God Bless America” to “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and “Blue Skies,” lived here with his family in 1931, shortly after the 16-story building debuted in 1929.

The Berlins lived here until 1944, and photos of the apartment during that era — taken by photographer Samuel Gottscho, and on file with the Museum of the City of New York — were dug up by Curbed in 2017.

Not much has structurally changed since then. The penthouse features stunning views over Carl Schurz Park, the East River and the city’s bridges.

It’s anchored by a foyer that opens to a circular staircase, a corner living room with a wood-burning fireplace — and a landscaped wraparound terrace.
