Our village has a giant £1M car park – but only 3 drivers use it… it’s a complete waste of money | The Sun

LOCALS say a huge car park which was built in their village and cost more than £1million was a complete waste of money as only three drivers have used it.

Aerial photos show just one car parked in the new 112-space car park at Manea station, north of the city of Ely, three days after it opened.

The car park was built in the small village as part of a £9.5m scheme by former Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Mayor James Palmer to improve Fenland rail stations.

It opened on August 7 at 5.30am after a series of delays caused by CCTV connections to Cambridgeshire police.

But residents have blasted the council for wasting tax-payers money, claiming it will not be used by many cars as there is no evening train service and it is out of the village.

One resident said: “Manea is a small village in the middle of nowhere and the car park has been built on the outskirts, so it really only serves the station.

“There is no evening train service in or out of Manea so the station is never that busy and I just can’t see the need for such a big car park.

“It’s a complete waste of money.”

The car park has been 20 years in the planning, with councillors hoping that providing a large parking area will enable them to push for more train services.

It was meant to have opened in April 2022 but it has been held up by issues of CCTV connections to Cambridgeshire police.

Local councillor Charlie Marks said: “This car park has been almost 20 years in the planning and building and has been held up on numerous occasions due to unforeseen issues, but finally Manea will have free well-lit CCTV-monitored off-street parking for rail users using our station.”
