Oven expert shares foolproof cleaning method for ‘best results’
Express uses baking soda to remove grease from oven racks
Over time, ovens can become caked in grease and grime which can be hard to remove. They are often forgotten about until the grime is extremely stubborn so it is best to keep on top of the chore regularly.
Dean Davies, oven cleaning technician at Fantastic Services, said: “If you want to clean your oven without any harsh chemicals, simply place a heat resistant container of water inside while it’s still warm after cooking.
“Let it sit for 20 minutes, then turn off the oven and allow it to cool completely, then wipe out the inside with a damp cloth.
“If you’re dealing with extra greasy areas, mix up a homemade degreaser by combining two tablespoons of baking soda with one teaspoon of water.
“Add a few drops of essential oils for a pleasant scent in your kitchen.”
For the “best results”, apply this homemade mixture to the oven before letting it sit overnight to work.
In the morning, wipe the mixture away with a cloth dampened in a white vinegar and water solution.
The expert added: “To clean the shelves, start by laying down some old towels in your bathtub.
“Next, gently place the racks in the tub and fill it with hot water until they are submerged.

“If the shelves are in need of a deep clean, consider using dishwasher tablets.
“They work just as well as cleaning solutions made specifically for ovens, and they’re much easier to come by.
“Just pop a couple in and let the shelves soak for at least four or five hours – overnight is even better.”
Once soaked, the expert said you should be able to wipe the stains off easily.

However, if there are any remaining spots, use a non-abrasive sponge or brush.
Last step is to clean the door which can get covered in grime and dirt.
If the door is removable, it can be soaked in the bath with hot water and dishwasher tablets too.
The expert noted: “However, if the door is particularly dirty or stained, you may need to put in some extra effort to clean it properly.
“In this case, I recommend using a glass scraper, which is ideal for removing tough stains.”
Dishwasher tablets can also be used to remove coffee and tea stains from mugs. Tannins, or tannic acid, are what give the tea and coffee their colour, and it is often used in hair dyes as well as fake tans.
It is harmless for the body but can leave mugs looking dirty, even after putting them through the dishwasher.
To clean them, fill the mug with hot water and drop a dishwasher tablet inside before leaving it to work for 10 minutes. The mug may need some scrubbing but the dishwasher tablet should have dissolved and removed the brown marks inside the cup.
