When members of Britain’s Royal Family need a break they have been known to retreat to their quieter royal residences in Sandringham or Aberdeenshire. As for the Swedish and Danish royals, they have some stunning secret escapes located around Europe. Here are four of the most idyllic royal residences.

Birkhall, Scotland

Birkhall is King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla’s idyllic Scottish residence located a short distance away from Balmoral Castle.

As Prince of Wales, Charles and Camilla were frequently in residence at Birkhall while completing royal engagements in Scotland.

The pair spent the first UK Covid lockdown at Birkhall, and Charles was in residence when he tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020.

Before she died in 2002, the Queen Mother frequently holidayed at Birkhall during the summer months.

She had previously used Birkhall as a Scottish home while married to the Duke of York, the future King George VI.

During this time, the late Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret spent much of their childhood at Birkhall, experiences which likely started off a life-long love of Scotland for the monarch.

The gardens of Birkhall are a source of great pride for the famously green-fingered King and he also enjoys fishing in the area.

Anmer Hall, Norfolk

Anmer Hall is situated on the Sandringham Estate now owned by King Charles, and the late Queen gifted the residence to Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales when they married in 2011.

The Waleses famously spent the UK Covid lockdowns at Anmer as the residence offers the family loads of green space to explore.

The house remains their family base in Norfolk today, but the Waleses also call Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace and Adelaide Cottage in Windsor home.

Solliden Palace, Sweden

The Swedish royals call Solliden Palace on the island of Öland their summer residence.

Notably, the royals visit Solliden for Victoriadagen or Victoria Day, a national celebration of Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday in July.

Although it is a private royal residence, tourists are permitted to enjoy the palace’s exhibits and grounds.

Château de Cayx

Located in the wine district of Cahors in France, the Château de Cayx is frequently visited by the Danish royal family.

Not open to the public except for garden tours in the summer, Château de Cayx is a private royal residence.

It was purchased by Queen Margrethe of Denmark and her late husband Prince Henrik in the 1970s.

French-born Prince Henrik was born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat, and his childhood home of Le Cayrou is just a short distance away.
