Having a bad night’s sleep can ruin your day and can even affect your mood. Adjusting your sleep schedule can be tricky, especially if you don’t have a set working routine. To get a better night’s sleep, memoryfoampillows.co.uk have pulled together their top 10 tips while enlisting the expertise of interior designer Xander Shreenan from Dowsing & Reynolds.
1. Paint your walls and ceiling the same colour
This may sound unusual but it could actually help you have a better sleep.
Mr Shreenan said: “This has a cocoon effect which is great for relaxation.”
The interior expert also said it could make your room look bigger as it will mimic higher ceilings.
2. Choose a light blue colour scheme
Blue is known for being a calming colour which could help lift your mood.
If you don’t like blue, the expert recommends another light, cool colour which is proven to make you happier compared to heavier and warmer colours.
3. Improve your room’s air quality with plants
Houseplants improve air quality in a room and can also change the humidity of a room.
Mr Shreenan said: “Plants improve air quality and can change the humidity in a room, making the atmosphere more pleasant.”
The most effective plants include spider plants, peace lilies and bamboo plants.
4. Move your bed
Where your bed is has a surprisingly big impact on your sleep.
According to feng shui, your bed should be in a “commanding” position which isn’t directly in line with a door.
You should put the head of your bed against a wall but avoid being underneath any windows.

5. Choose natural bedding
Natural bedding will regulate your body temperature.
Your core body temperature changes during your 24-hour sleep-wake cycle which means it cools down when you sleep but warms up when you’re awake.
Mr Shreenan recommended “soft, breathable fabric for bedding to regulate body temperature” such as cotton or linen.
6. Tidy up
Having a cluttered room can make you feel “unsettled”, according to the interior expert.
Mr Shreenan suggested cleaning up clutter before you go to bed.
7. Accessorise with an essential oil diffuser
Lavender oil is a good way to improve your sleep quality and make you feel less tired in the day.
8. Get a dimmer lamp
Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced by your body to help you sleep.
Regular room lighting can actually suppress this, so investing in a dimmer switch can control the ambience.
Mr Shreenan added: “Turn down the ceiling lighting in the evening or use a bedside table lamp so that your eyes aren’t strained before bed.”
9. Keep your bedroom phone-free
The blue light emitted from phones and laptops can negatively impact your sleep so it’s best to avoid using them an hour or two before bed.
Even having your phone by your bed can disrupt you, so it’s best to keep it out of the room.
10. Blackout curtains
Darkness sends sleep signals to your body so it’s important to keep your bedroom dark to stop you waking up in the early hours, especially in the summer.
Investing in blackout curtains will ensure you stay asleep.
