Cleaning expert reveals top tips to protect your kitchen from germs and bacteria

Cleaning has been more important than ever over the past few months. With people spending their free time cleaning their homes in an attempt to keep the coronavirus out, cleaning experts have revealed the proper way to clean and organise your kitchen.

Cleaning your home is an important part of keeping it clean and hygienic.

Whats more, cleaning your kitchen is one of the most important parts of your home. This is because it is a high traffic area that sees many people through it on a regular basis.

Also, it is where food is prepared and therefore keeping the surfaces and the fridge clean and hygienic is important for your health too.

A recent report by Which* has revealed 71 percent of adults admit they do not regularly clean their home appliances, with washing machines only cleaned one a year on average.

Fridges and microwaves tend to be cleaned slightly more often, with Brits cleaning them on average eight times a year.

Kutchenhaus has teamed with Lynsey Crombie, better known as the Queen of Clean to reveal five top tips that you might not have thought of yo help get your kitchen spick and span:

Order the kitchen

Ordering the kitchen is an important part of cleaning the kitchen. This includes creating zones which you can clean step by step.

Food storage, cleaning, preparation, dishwasher storage and cooking zones are the key five.

It is recommended to reorganise the kitchen so that every utensil is near the required zone.

For example, making sure all pots and pans are near the oven/microwave.

Empty and organise your cupboards

The cleaning experts advise to empty all your dry food cupboards to check at the sell by date.

It is easy for tins and packets to get lost in the depth of your food cupboards to never be seen again!

Also ordering by dates can help you make sure that you don’t waste any food.

Do a deep clean

While your cupboards are empty of all food, it is the perfect time to wipe down the insides.

Lynsey states that a two-step cleaning process should be used here by first, using a detergent to lift dirt and grime and then using a disinfectant to kill any germs and bacteria.

Also, wiping down the food packets, jars and tins before putting them back in the cupboard can help get rid of germs.

Clear the sides

Once you have all the food cupboards back in their place, it is important to look at what is left out on your work surfaces and around the kitchen.

Everything that should and could go away should be in its place, and those that don’t shouldn’t be in the kitchen.

This works as a decluttering process for the kitchen to see what you are actually using.

Make it a family affair

Dividing the jobs between family members will help the process complete a lot quicker.

Lynsey recommends allowing the kitchen to complete the easier tasks like wiping items like light switches, door handles and cupboard handles.

She commented: “A kitchen needs a regular clean and even more so at this time due to having all the family at home. Your kitchen is one of the highest traffic areas in your home so key areas should be focused on.

“It’s essential to clean the areas we’re constantly in contact with like kettle handles, cabinets and drawers but we also need to clean washing machines and dishwashers as it’s important to clean the things that clean us!”
