SAG-AFTRA’s Duncan Crabtree-Ireland Heads To New York Comic Con For AI Discussion

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, is attending New York Comic Con on Oct. 14 for the panel “AI in Entertainment: The Performer’s Perspective”.

The event comes in the wake of Crabtree-Ireland’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, soon after the actors strike began in mid-July, where he led a panel for voiceover actors, discussing their rights, as well as a pitstop at the Toronto International Film Festival where he had both a sitdown, and a teamed picket with Canada’s commercial actors who’ve been suffering a long contract lockout.

The news of Crabtree-Ireland’s NYCC appearance in ten days is, of course, coming as the SAG-AFTRA Chief Negotiator is today back at the bargaining table with the CEO Gang of Four –Universal’s Donna Langley, Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros’ David Zaslav and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos– in pursuit of a new three-year contract that could end the actors’ guild over-80 day long strike.

That labor action is the predominant reason why NYCC will be almost entirely devoid of big stars this year, except for the autograph booths.

Don’t read too many tea leaves into the Oct. 14 date on whether that means the actors guild and the AMPTP anticipate having a tentative agreement in hand before then.

The New York Comic Con panel will cover how existing legal structures can be used in some areas and how new standards need to be built for performers and producers to collaborate while still protecting individual rights to performance and publicity. Crabtree-Ireland will discuss how SAG-AFTRA is approaching the issue, the laws surrounding this technology, and its role in the current strike and recent strike authorization vote on the Interactive Media Agreement that covers members’ work on video games.

Also appearing on the NYCC AI panel with Crabtree Ireland are Cissy Jones (The Owl House, Transformers Earthrise), Courtenay Taylor (Mass Effect series, Resident Evil series), Tim Friedlander (Record of Ragnarok, president/founder of NAVA) and Andi Norris (Resident Evil 8: Village, Star Wars Vader Immortal). Linsay Rousseau (Transformers: War for Cybertron, God of War Ragnarok) will moderate.
