Five easy DIY jobs to create a ‘dream’ kitchen on a budget

Phil Spencer advice on improving your kitchen and bathroom

Kitchen design expert Penelope Jacobs at MyJobQuote.co.uk has teamed up with several kitchen experts and interior designers to create a list of ways to help Britons achieve a “dream” kitchen without “breaking the bank”.

1. Paint kitchen cabinets

Tom Hilger, independent remodelling designer and consultant for Deluxe Plumbers, said: “One of the easiest and cheapest ways to transform your kitchen is to paint your cabinets.

“You can choose a fresh and bright colour, such as white, grey or blue to make your kitchen look more spacious and modern.

“You can also add some contrast by painting your island or lower cabinets a different colour from the rest of your cabinets.”

If Britons paint their kitchen cabinets instead of purchasing new ones, they’ll be able to save a huge amount of money.

The expert said painting will give the cabinets and the kitchen “a new lease of life”.

2. Use peel-and-stick tiles

For anyone who is thinking of adding tiles to their kitchen floors, or as a splashback, consider choosing peel-and-stick tiles as opposed to real ones.

The expert said these are much cheaper and easier to install, with homeowners being able to fit them themselves.

David Mason, interior designer and founder of Knobs.com, said: “These self-adhesive tiles come in a wide range of patterns and colours, so you can create the perfect look for your home.

“Plus, they’re easy to install – all you have to do is cut the tile to size and stick it to the wall or floor.”

4. Swap out the hardware

Replacing cabinet hardware can make a big impact without breaking the bank.

This includes swapping the handles on kitchen cabinets and drawers which can easily be done within a few minutes.

Benjamin Stenson, home improvement expert and founder of Norseman, explained: “New handles and knobs can modernise the look of your kitchen instantly.”

5. Clean and re-grout tiles

Tile splashbacks can get dirty and tired over the years, but can be brought back to life by cleaning and re-grouting them.

This can easily be done with a few cheap tools from your local hardware or DIY store.
