If you’re sick and tired of looking at your kitchen cabinets, painting them is an easy way to completely transform the space. Colourtrend Colour Consultant, Mary Kelly, said: “When it comes to painting your kitchen cupboards, there are a few things to consider. This includes surface preparation, application of primer and of course choosing a colour to ensure a long-lasting finish.”

When it comes to painting kitchen cupboards, the expert said surface preparation is “crucial” to get a “professional” finish.

Mary explained: “The durability of your finished cupboards can be impaired by an unsound or poorly prepared surface, so due to the nature of the kitchen, ensure you clean your cupboards with a specific degreaser cleaner.

“Extra cleaning around areas near hobs, handles and extractor hoods is also advised.

“Sanding down the surface of your cupboards is the best way to help achieve a nice smooth finish, and make sure to clean all the dust from surfaces.

“Where possible, remove any handles to allow for an easier application and once all your surfaces are sanded, clean, dry and sound, you can begin painting.

The number of coats needed to prime the cabinets will often be dictated by the surface on which you are preparing.

For high gloss, varnished, melamine, or laminate surfaces, DIYers will require an adhesion primer. For timber with knots, a primer with a blocking ability is essential.

The expert added: “Then, once dry, apply your undercoat to create an even surface and provide an even smoother look.

“When it comes to your topcoat, choose between Eggshell, Satin, or Gloss in your desired colour, however if you require a tougher finish, use acrylic.

“Apply the first coat with a brush, roller, or spray in your chosen colour and finish, before allowing to dry for six to eight hours, depending on the drying conditions.

“Repeat the process when adding your second coat and once dry, your coating will achieve full adhesion in seven days.”

Homebase added: “Work from top to bottom and crisscross your strokes for an even finish. Leave to dry for eight hours before repeating.

“After 24 hours, apply the Maison Déco Kitchen Extra Strong Varnish to protect the surface. Always ensure to paint in thin layers to build up to your desired colour.

“Once finished, you can use gentle cleaning products and a non-abrasive sponge to clean your new kitchen cupboards.”

If painting the cabinets outside, it is worth checking on the weather first, making sure it is a dry day. If painting indoors, the experts said to build a makeshift painting booth to contain the spray.

Leave the cabinets to dry for 12 hours before fixing the hardware back onto the doors and mounting them back onto the cabinets.

As well as painting kitchen cabinets, DIYers could also opt to spray paint them which is another effective way to transform the kitchen and can often be easier than painting.

Experts at Checkatrade said: “Wearing a mask, spray the door edges first. Next, spray any detail on the doors. Then, keeping the nozzle of the spray gun 10 to 12 inches from the surface of the cabinet door, sweep your whole arm back and forth to apply a light coat of paint to the entire door.

“Any drops can be touched up gently with a paintbrush while the paint is still wet.

“Allow to dry overnight before giving the doors a second coat. The whole process will need to be repeated on the other side of the door once the first side is dry.”
