A scratchy towel is no one’s favourite bathroom staple. Consumer Ed Alice Beer spoke on This Morning about how people at home can make their towels fresh and fluffy.
Popping clothes in the washing machine is something many of us do daily without even thinking about.
However, This Morning revealed in 2018 that, when it comes to washing, a whopping 90 percent of us are doing it wrong.
What’s more, the average person ruins £150 worth of clothes per year.
Alice proposed that her laundry hack for rejuvenating towels might be one to “change your life”.
She suggested that the reason clothes and other washable items get ruined is we use the wrong products and wrong quantities.
Alice told viewers how to replenish their towels at home, quickly and easily.
She stated: “Can I just say, we buy these based on their fluffiness don’t we?
“They come from the shop all fluffy and gorgeous and then within a couple of washes we’ve slightly ruined them.”
Alice continued by saying that when it comes to cleaning towels, using more product isn’t necessarily the best move.
She explained that “less is more with a towel”, referring to the perfect quantity of detergent and fabric softener.
Too much detergent will coat the towel, resulting in it becoming less absorbent.
To Holly’s surprise, Alice also encouraged people to ditch the fabric softener all together.
According to the expert, using fabric softener on towels is essentially cleaning it and then “adding a layer of chemicals” to it.
She stated emphatically: “If you want soft towels you do not need the fabric softener.”
She did however admit that it does make your washing smell nice, and that she uses a drop herself – but just a “tiny little bit”.
Alice urged people to “please not overuse it”, or they will run the risk of crunchy, dry towels.
Once the towel is clean, it is crucial not to “over dry it”, suggested the expert.
Comparing it to a loaf of bread, she explained that a towel should be taken out of the dryer before a “crucial moment”.
She suggested putting towels on a cool wash because they shouldn’t be too dirty – unless you’re drying the dog with them.
Alice concluded that the key to soft, fluffy towels is not overdoing it on product or drying time.
