Drivers can be slapped with £500 fines for not wearing their seatbelts – but when do you NOT have to buckle up?

DRIVERS can be fined £500 for not wearing their seatbelts.

But there are some times when motorists are legally allowed to drive without a seatbelt.

While it is always good to buckle up, taxi drivers and motorists reversing are among those who do not have to by law.

When don't I need to wear a seat belt?

Drivers are exempt from wearing a seatbelt under the following conditions:

A driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing

In a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services

A passenger in a trade vehicle and you’re investigating a fault

Driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that's travelling no more than 50 metres between stops

A licensed taxi driver who is ‘plying for hire’ or carrying passengers#

Are there medical exemptions?

Yes. But you must have a note from your doctor stating you don't have to wear one for medical reasons.

The Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing must be kept with you at all times when driving.

You must show it to police if asked and inform your insurer if you get one of the certificates.

What about pregnant or disabled drivers?

Pregnant and disabled drivers must wear a seatbelt at all times by law, unless a doctor decides they are exempt for medical reasons.

What are the rules for children?

Most children are required to use a car seat until the age of 12. The full guidance of car seat laws is here.

The law states: "You must wear a seat belt if one is fitted in the seat you’re using – there are only a few exceptions.

"You’re also only allowed one person in each seat fitted with a seat belt.

"You can be fined up to £500 if you don’t wear a seat belt when you’re supposed to."
