Drivers left baffled as council paints ‘crazy’ double yellow lines in bizarre place – despite ‘no parking issues’

'CRAZY' double yellow lines have been bizarrely painted by the local council across road entrances – leaving drivers baffled.

Residents in Lostwithiel, Cornwall were confused as to why the lines have been drawn as they say there have been no issues of people obstructing the entrances.

The lines were painted by Cormac, on behalf of Cornwall Council, following a consultation to improve accessibility after some careless parking in recent years.

A consultation in late January 2021 saw plans laid out to introduce 'no waiting at any time' restrictions to much of Lostwithiel to improve visibility and emergency vehicle access, reports Cornwall Live.

This included parts of Castle Hill, Tanhouse Road, Quay Street, Summers Street and Bodmin Hill to name just a few impacted locations.

However, there were no plans to introduce double yellow lines to junctions or road entrances and locals can't believe what they're seeing, disagreeing with the changes.

A letter sent to residents detailing the work in January 2021 read: "Cormac Solutions Ltd, on behalf of Cornwall Council are inviting comments on proposals for various waiting restrictions in the St Blazey, Fowey & Lostwithiel Community Network Area.

"These proposals have been formulated following discussions with the St Blazey, Fowey & Lostwithiel Community Network Panel and the relevant Cornwall councillors."

FINE LINE

Yellow lines painted behind BENCHES slammed before U-turn by red-faced council

The areas affected were nominated to "improve road safety" following concerns about visibility, obstructive and inconsiderate parking and access issues for emergency service vehicles.

But Cormac workers have left people in disbelief as they continued the double yellow lines right across two road entrances in the historic town, making it look as if they are unusable.

One local said "one of the most ancient parts of the town was visually ruined" thanks to the bright yellow lines which now run in front of the ancient arched tunnel on Quay Street.

Others called the mishap "priceless", "absolutely laughable" and "unbelievable".

Another said: "It ruins the aesthetics of the tunnel."

"What? So we can't park in front of the tunnel to block the road? Well that's just crazy," one quipped.

Another added: "They have gone completely mad with double yellow lines all around the town, parking is going to be a nightmare! And you know traffic wardens will be a more common sight."

"And I always thought April Fool's Day was the first of April. Well that's gone out of the window," joked another.

A spokesperson for Cormac said: "The yellow lines have been implemented following local concerns of inconsiderate and obstructive parking. Where access points into roads are particularly narrow, it is not unusual to take the lines directly across the access to further discourage obstructive parking.

"When any lining is first introduced there will always be a visual impact, but this will become less obvious over time.”
