Steve McQueen’s E-Type Jaguar from film Le Mans could be YOURS for £300,000 at auction

STEVE McQueen’s Jaguar which featured in film Le Mans is up for grabs for £300,000 at auction.

The iconic 1970 E-Type will be unveiled in Paris in February – and is set to be offered up for sale during the 2022 Monaco Historic Grand Prix on May 13.

The prized motor featured in 1971 film Le Mans, which depicted a fictional 24-hour car race starring legendary actor McQueen.

It features actual footage captured during the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans race from that previous June.

The 1970 E-Type was based on Jaguar's D-Type racing car.

The model had won the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans race three years in a row from 1955.

The car, which formed part of McQueen's "personal fleet", is on offer with it's original period UK registration number plates.

The unrestored US-specification car has its original silver-over-black colour scheme.

Owner Fredy Zurbrügg, 80, was a chef when he was approached by production manager Hubert Fröhlich.

He wanted Zurbrügg to work on the sixth Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which was partly filmed in Switzerland.

Impressed with his work, Mr Fröhlich approached Fredy to cook for the cast and crew of his next production, Le Mans.

Fredy brought his own kitchen with him – and was soon catering for 800 people.

This was including McQueen himself, for whom he invented a special dish – the "Steve Steak".

Fredy said the actor asked him to "choose one" of the famous petrolhead's personal fleet once production was over.

He had the choice of a Porsche 911, a Mercedes Pagoda SL or the Jaguar – and he picked the latter.

SMOOTH RIDE

Fredy said: "I decided on the silver Jaguar, a convertible E-Type Series II with only 600 miles on the speedo.

"It was a US version because it was supposed to be shipped back to America."

The Jaguar has been used sparingly over the last 52 years – and has only 46,000 miles on the clock.

Fredy said he "had no idea he owned something so valuable" – but is ready for it to be enjoyed by someone else.
