Mould often thrives in bathrooms due to the humid environment. The combination of moisture and heat is the perfect environment for mould spores to begin to grow.
Unsurprisingly, your shower is a hub for mould, and you might start noticing spores forming on the bottom of your shower curtain.
Mould, if it is allowed to build up, could be potentially dangerous. According to the NHS: “If you have damp and mould in your home you’re more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.”
Some people, such as elderly people or babies, are more sensitive to mould than others.
While buying a new shower curtain might seem like the easiest option to get rid of any mould you might spot, this can become a costly process.
Luckily, there are ways you can free it from mould spores.
Using chemical cleaners
According to maids.com, a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water can be a good cleaning solution to kill off mould spores.
Maids.com explains: “Spray a solution of two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part water onto the shower curtain.
“Let the hydrogen peroxide sit for five to ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
“Use a baking soda paste and scrub the mould until it’s gone.”

There are also a number of mould-busting cleaning products available from most DIY stores and supermarkets.
In a dedicated cleaning forum, Reddit user Uxoguy said this is the way to go.
He said: “Bleach against mould is not the way to go.
“Sure it’ll kill the spores but won’t remove them.
“You need to remove the spores or mould will just feed off the dead spores and regrow.
“Get a heavy-duty cleaner, something higher on the acidity scale, clean the area with hot water and a sponge.”
Others recommended simply popping your shower curtain into the washing machine.
A Reddit user posting under the name Chubbiguy40 said: “I have been washing my shower curtains in the washing machine every month for decades with nothing but excellent results.”
Using natural cleaners
Many people are moving towards using more natural cleaning products in their homes, and there are plenty of recommendations for chemical-free ways of banishing mould.
The team at Black Mould Control state: “Some people do not like to use bleach to clean the plastic or vinyl shower curtains because of the toxic fumes. If you would prefer, you can use white vinegar, instead.”
They advise filling a spray bottle with one part vinegar and one part water, spritzing the curtain down and then scrubbing thoroughly.
They add: “As preventative maintenance, spray down the curtain with the vinegar solution once a week and allow it to air dry.”
This is a tried and tested method, with Reddit user Scobot claiming it works for them.
They said results promise “no more mould [and] no more musty smells.” [SIC]
