‘Be ruthless’: Interior designer Sophie Robinson on how to make a small room ‘feel bigger’

New Channel 5 series Dream Home Makeovers with Sophie Robinson will see the interior expert encourage homeowners to be brave with their homes when it comes to injecting style and personality. In each programme, Sophie tackles two different interiors while advising homeowners on how to design their home and best spend their money. In light of the new show, Sophie shared some of her interior design tips exclusively with Express.co.uk.
Sophie, who has over 20 years experience in interior design, offered her solution to a common problem: how to make a small room “feel bigger”.
The interior designer said there are two ways a homeowner can make a room appear bigger.
She explained: “First of all, your storage and layout.
“To create a feeling of space, it doesn’t work if you’ve just choked your room up with loads of stuff.

“I find a lot of people hoard things or they don’t have the space to store things efficiently.
“So on the boring, practical front, essentially you need to get organised, get rid of stuff and then organise the stuff you do need to have in the room.”
Sophie said this is the case for a plethora of room types, whether it’s an office, a children’s room or a spare bedroom.
“You just need to be quite ruthless”, she added.

Sophie said homeowners can also try to use a decorating scheme that helps make a room feel bigger.
The interior designer suggested using plain colours and cool, pale colours.
Cool pale colours include blue, grey and pale green.
She said these are known as “recessive” and will visually make a room “feel bigger”.

“Pale blue, pale grey, pale lilac, pale green make a space recede away from the eye making it feel bigger,” she said.
“An uncluttered look will also make your room feel more spacious.
“Plain curtains, plain walls – a simple style.”
On the first episode of Dream Home Makeovers with Sophie Robinson, Sophie faces the challenge of transforming a huge living space in a converted schoolhouse in Nottinghamshire.
The couple have very different ideas with Kirstie wanting a cosy and sociable space and Martin wanting an 85-inch TV and a full-size snooker table.
Sophie will also be helping Arabella and Mark transform the living room and entrance hallway of their grand Georgian house in Middlesex.
However, the couple haven’t decorated the spaces since they moved in 13 years ago.
