‘No surprise it’s favourite’: Interior pro on ‘stunning’ popular paint colours for winter

An interior expert delved into thousands of Instagram posts to see which colours are trending this season. Co-founder and creative director of The French Bedroom Company, Georgia Metcalfe found that forest green, royal blue and burnt orange are among some of the most popular colours of autumn/winter 2021, according to Instagram. Georgia unveiled the popular paint colours after searching for hashtags such as #autumninteriors, #autumn and #wintercolours.

The interiors expert found the most popular colour choices of this autumn and winter, and how to bring these into the home.

These are the five most popular colours of autumn and winter 2021 according to Instagram:

Royal Blue

Dark blues can seem quite intimidating in most interior settings, especially in rooms that lack natural light.

However, Georgia said it’s “wonderful” that the colour is taking “centre stage” this winter.

The interior expert said certain tones can look “truly stunning” in both modern and classically styled rooms.

She suggested “deep and rich” tones like navy or Prussian blue.

Georgia said: “If deep blue is too strong, you can incorporate it as glass, for example as glass side lights or pendant lights, adding colour to a neutral room.

“Accessorise with cushions and throws of similar shades to tie it all together.

“If you feel like going bolder with blue, why not try some blue velvet bed linen and then add a striking feature wall behind your headboard?”

Mauve and Neutrals

Neutrals can sound and look a little dull if they’re styled in the wrong way.

However, with the right tones and design, it can look “simple yet effective”.

Georgia said: “Neutrals are always a great idea.

“Simple yet effective – the layering of oatmeal, stone, taupe, mauve and brown in a room brings a relaxed Scandi vibe.”

Georgia suggested adding an oversized rug to a dark wooden floor to create a textured look.

Naturalistic decor like carved wooden armoires or rattan beds can complete also add to the style.

Blush Pink

Georgia explained that “muted pinks” have become “very popular” in interiors over the last month.

She said a good way to add them into your interior is by incorporating them into furnishings.

She said: “Opting for a pale pink upholstered bed, ottoman or stool will add femininity and romance to a white bedroom.

“Pulling the look together with a candle, wall art and cushions will make a magical sanctuary for you to retreat to.

“Rose pinks have also become a favourite choice for living rooms, with luxurious velvet sofas taking centre stage. Pink is the new neutral.”

Olive Green

Shades of green have been very popular this year, adding a naturalistic vibe to bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces.

Georgia described the colour’s recent rise in popularity as a “biophilic trend”.

She added: “From shades of sage and cardamon during the warmer months, to olive and forest in the winter months, there are plenty of ways to bring green into your home.

Burnt Orange

Burnt orange is autumnal and reflects the 70s trend that’s made a recent comeback.

Georgia said: “Orange always feels autumnal so is popular in interiors this time of year.

“It’s no surprise orange is a favourite on Instagram at the moment.

“As the days darken and the weather turns colder, it is comforting to bring warmth into our homes with burnt orange hues.

“This year we have seen the nostalgic 70s trend; use vibrant colour choices to tap into this time-warping trend and have fun with textured feathered lamp shades, tassels, fringing and macrame wall hangings and planters.”
