Interior design expert and founder of Poodle & Blonde, Whinnie Williams spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about her role as a B&Q changemaker. Whinnie’s role is to inspire homeowners to repurpose spaces in their homes affordably. The interior pro, who also calls herself a DIY queen, has shared some of her tips for upcycling furniture in your home.

Whinnie said she “loves” an upcycle and explained that there are lots of things you can do to old furniture to modernise it.

She said: “I love an upcycle. The number one thing you should be doing if you’re tweaking your house is thinking ‘is there anything here I can re-use?’

“If there’s furniture you love that you’ve fallen out with – maybe the colour, or the shape – there’s so many amazing paints and things like primer.

“I didn’t realise you can pretty much paint anything if you primed it first.

“That’s what’s exciting! You can repaint things, spray it, upholster it, get yourself a staple gun.

“It’s really satisfying to bring things hack to life that you already have.”

It can be hard to find interior inspiration, especially if you’re not a fan of current trends.

However, rather than searching on social media or flicking through magazines, Whinnie suggested looking at your wardrobe.

She said: “When you put on a good outfit, and you’re thinking ‘I’m really liking this colour at the moment’, I feel like that with interiors.

“I really go through a phase and just keep seeing it.

“Trends are great but it’s important to really do things you love.”

Some of her inspiration comes from her favourite films, well-designed restaurants and swanky bars.

She continued: “I get lots of inspiration from films, restaurants and bars.

“Bars are really cool places where people get really creative when they design them.

“Museums, vintage shops, I love vintage. There’s inspiration everywhere.

“But if you’re not sure what your style is, just look in your wardrobe.”

In partnership with B&Q, Whinnie will be making over an “unloved” room in her house using B&Q’s new furniture range as a part of the store’s campaign.

B&Q, the UK’s leading home improvement retailer, recently revealed that a whopping 78 percent of Britons would like to repurpose their space following a shift in how homeowners view their homes.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 70 percent have chosen to change the way they use their space at home.

Some of the spaces were transformed into everything from guest bedrooms to home gyms.
