Washing machine drawers can get mouldy if not cleaned often. This often happens when it doesn’t completely empty of washing powder or detergent. Asking for advice on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Tia Amica asked for some help with her washing machine.
She wrote: “Help! I need something I can put in the washing machine drawer to clean the whole washing machine out! It’s vile, it’s grim in there.”
The post attracted more than 50 comments from group members all sharing their top tips.
Kirstie Powell wrote: “Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda and pour white vinegar on it. It’ll start to fizz up and then just scrub it.”
Bicarbonate of soda is a mild alkaline that acts as a mild abrasive, perfect for removing grime.
When mixed with white vinegar, the combination helps to lift dirt as well as target stains.
Sharon Graham added: “Definitely bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar on top. An old toothbrush will fit well in there.”
Using a toothbrush will help to lift the grime, making sure all the hard spots are reached.
Sal Car wrote: “You can spray all the machine with white vinegar and add a tiny bit of bleach. Scrub it and then put on a very hot wash, 90 degrees if you have it. It should all come up sparkling clean.”

Lisa Norris said: “I use a mild dishwasher tablet and pop it on a 90 short wash.”
“Yep, dishwasher tablet all the way. Make sure you don’t use it all the time but it’ll do the trick initially,” wrote Lisa Adams.
Dishwasher tablets can help to break down dirt particles and remove stubborn stains more easily.
However, experts have warned that it can also leave a coating on the inside of the washing machine, making it less effective when washing clothing.
Stacey Martin commented: “I use Flash bathroom cleaner on the drum and door and a Minky soft cleaner brush.
“I use Flash bathroom cleaner for the drawer and then I get a baby bottle brush for the water pipe. I then pour Ace cleaner in the drum and wash on the hottest wash.
“Finally, I use Fabulosa and just put it on a spin. Washing machine smells fab….Hope that works for you.”

Many group members suggested using a scented disinfectant in the drawer of the washing machine to help remove germs and bacteria from the inside.
It’ll also help to leave a fresh smell in the washing machine.
