Apple event latest: New iPhone 13 ‘most expensive ever’ as three models SCRAPPED and new Apple Watch unveiled

APPLE has unveiled FOUR new iPhone models – including the most expensive model ever while THREE models have been quietly scrapped.

Last night, Apple unveiled the hotly anticipated device is called the iPhone 13 and there's also an iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max costs £1,549, making it the most expensive top model iPhone ever.

With the iPhone 13 now being official, several models have since been "sunsetted". Unsurprisingly, last year's iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max met the chopping block.

That's not all: Apple has also killed off an older smartphone. The iPhone XR – launched in 2018 as a "cheaper" model – is no longer available.

APPLE WATCH 7 GETS STUNNING REDESIGN

The Apple Watch 7 is upping the ante on the fitness front this time around, by detecting when you’re riding a bike and prompting you to start your workout.

There’s also improved support for e-bikes, and fall detection.

The big news is the redesign, which sees a larger screen that’s around 20% larger than last year.

The bezel has been shrunk by 40%, coming in at a barely-there 1.7mm. The watch face design sports a softer look, with rounder edges.

The display has also had an upgrade and is easier to use thanks to its increased size, and optimised apps.

This new iPad Mini is 40% faster on CPU performance and 80% faster on GPU performance, according to Apple.

The tech giant is selling the iPad Mini’s ability to play video games – and perform powerful machine learning tasks.

That includes the new Translate app in iPadOS 15, which automatically translates foreign-language conversations in real-time.

IOS 15 RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED – SORT OF

While Apple did not mention the release date of iOS 15 last night, Apple said in a press release for its new iPad that the iPadOS 15 operating system will arrive on Monday, 20 September.

It is usually released alongside the latest iOS for the iPhone, so it’s safe to assume that iOS 15 will also come out on that date.

APPLE QUIETLY SCRAPS THREE BELOVED IPHONE MODELS AFTER LAST NIGHT’S IPHONE 13 EVENT

Unsurprisingly, last year's iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max met the chopping block.

They're now totally gone from the Apple website – unless you're willing to buy a refurbished model.

However, the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 are both still available to buy, albeit with discounts.

That's not all: Apple has also killed off an older smartphone.

The iPhone XR – launched in 2018 as a "cheaper" model – is no longer available.

IPHONE 13 HAS NEW ‘SPACE MODE’ THAT TAKES AMAZING PICS OF THE NIGHT SKY

The new smartphone was unveiled last night – with a faster processor, improved camera and double the storage.

But one quiet improvement was only briefly mentioned during the Apple event.

Apple has actually improved astrophotography on the iPhone 13 Pro with a number of tricks.

This capability already existed in the iPhone, but it's now better with iPhone 13 Pro.

Night Mode lets you take photos in the dark without using flash by having an AI automatically brighten your snaps for you.

Users of the iPhone 13 Pro should get 1.5 hours more battery life than iPhone 12 Pro users.

WHO HAS THE BEST BLACK FRIDAY DEALS ON IPHONES?

Phone deals are always subjective – some people prioritise low monthly costs; others want to pay as little upfront as possible; others still are after data boosts.

Whatever’s most important to you, we suggest you take a look at this selection of leading retailers:

      • Fonehouse – here
      • Mobiles.co.uk – here
      • Carphone Warehouse – here
      • Affordable Mobiles – here

Don’t forget to check network-specific deals from the likes of Three, O2, EE and Vodafone.

iPHONE SERIES IS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER FROM THIS FRIDAY

The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999/£949 for 128GB.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at $1099/£1,049.

The 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max costs £1,549, making it the most expensive top model iPhone ever.

Analyst Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight told The Sun: “Apple has done a superb job of differentiating between the new iPhone 13 range. The new features among the Pro devices clearly justify a premium.”

You can pre-order all of the new iPhone 13 series from this Friday.

EXPLAINED: WILL THERE BY BLACK FRIDAY DEALS ON THE iPHONE 13?

We doubt it. While the iPhone 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max and 13 Mini will have hit shelves by that point, we’re not expecting any contracts that you might class as deals per se.

Similarly, it’s all-but-impossible that Apple will reduce prices on a series of handsets that have only been on sale for a couple of months.

      APPLE JUICE

You’ll get 1.5 hours more usage from the iPhone 13 versus the iPhone 12.

Apple says this battery life boost is partly thanks to the new A15 chip.

That’s great news! Who doesn’t like better battery life?

      I-SEE!

Face ID now fits into a 20% smaller space – slightly reducing the notch.

There’s a bigger battery (thanks to some internal re-engineering).

Apple has also created a smaller version of the iPhone 13 called the iPhone 13 Mini.

This is a similar format to last year’s iPhone 12.

Peak brightness on the iPhone 13’s screen is 1,200 nits – making outdoor use easy, even on sunny days.

Apple says the display has a high contrast ratio, so you can see true blacks.

That’s courtesy of a custom-built Apple OLED screen.

APPLE WATCH 7 GETS STUNNING REDESIGN (CONTINUED…)

The Apple Watch 7 starts at $399 and is available later this autumn.

“At first glance the latest Apple Watch is another iterative update, but the larger screen allowing bigger virtual buttons and a full qwerty keyboard should certainly improve usability,” Ben Wood at CSS Insight told The Sun.

“I’d expected to see a bump in battery life on the Apple Watch, as owners continue to clamour for smartwatches to last longer,” he added.

“But Apple has decided not to deviate from its 18-hour battery life. The faster charging will be welcomed, but for those wanting to track their sleep it would be far easier to offer a battery that lasts a couple of days.”

        FILM FIRST

Apple says the iPhone 13 Pro supports Dolby Vision HDR video recording.

It shows off the focus-changing Rack Focus feature in Cinematic Mode we saw on the iPhone 13.

Example footage looks great – it’s so good, it’s actually hard to believe it’s shot on iPhone.

You can even film in Macro mode, which is cool.

        MINI ME

Apple has unveiled a brand new iPad Mini.

It’s got an iPad Pro style design with an edge-to-edge screen.

Touch ID is built into the top button, like on iPad Air.

It looks great, to be fair.

        SUPER SNAPPER

Apple is talking up huge improvements in low-light photography.

That means “you’ll get beautiful photos in any situation”, according to Apple.

There’s also better astrophotography when shooting the night sky with a tripod, as rumoured.

Apple has also added a new Macro Photography mode, letting you magnify subjects with a minimum distance of 2cm.

        Example photos looked great.

        SPEED BOOST

The new iPhone 13 is powered by Apple’s brand new A15 processor.

It’s a custom built chip with a 6-core CPU (four of which are high-efficiency cores).

And the processor is built on a 5nm process, which means more transistors can be squeezed onto the chip.

In fact, Apple says it’s got 15billion transistors – they’re the tiny electronic switches that allows computing to happen.

More transistors on a chip generally means more computing potential.

So expect the iPhone 13 to be wildly fast. Even speedier than the very nippy iPhone 12!
