After moving in to their new home last year, Charlotte Reynolds and Mitchell Shergold decided to renovate the whole house, posting pictures with updates of the revamp on the couple’s Instagram page. The makeover cost just £1,200 to carry out, while taking around four weeks to complete.
Describing their vision behind the design, Charlotte, 28, said: “For the bathroom the style we went for is a mixture of Scandinavian/boho, but with modern touches in the fixtures and fittings.
“I wanted the bathroom to be bright and airy yet relaxing. Most of my inspiration came from some of my favourite accounts on Instagram and also Pinterest.”
With a baby daughter on the way, the couple from Essex were keen to complete the new bathroom before her arrival last year.
Charlotte said: “Mitchell was able to do all of the work himself, including the plumbing and tiling, which saved us a huge amount of money.
However, allocating time to an ambitious project can be challenging, said Charlotte, adding: “One of the challenges of doing the work yourself is that it can take a little longer to complete, so patience, and preferably friends or family willing to lend their shower, are key.
“Mitchell had to manage his time around work and other commitments, chipping away at the bathroom whenever he had a spare minute.
“So overall the full transformation took roughly three to four weeks.”
Keeping within a reasonably low budget played a key part in where the couple sourced their materials.

“We tried to keep costs down by searching the internet and comparing prices between different companies,” said Charlotte. “It can be worth spending a little time shopping around to find the best deals – a top tip is to always read the reviews before buying.”
Before embarking on renovating their new home, the couple revamped a two-bed bungalow, which they lived in, before selling it and making a profit of £70,000.
Offering advice to others keen to embark on their own renovation project, Charlotte said: “To anyone thinking about trying out some DIY in their bathroom, I say go for it.
“There are plenty of YouTube videos and Instagram posts showing you how it’s done. As long as you are able to take your time and pay attention to detail, you’ll save yourself a ton of money and have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself,” she added.

Bathroom and home supplies business, Tap Warehouse, who spoke to the couple after spotting their impressive project on social media, have offered some useful tips for fitting tiles in a bathroom.
Neutral-coloured tiles
Charlotte and Mitchell opted for neutral-coloured tiles, which Tap Warehouse said helped to provide an airy yet spacious feel to any bathroom. The bathroom experts also noted that the tiles complimented the fittings, including the matt black tap and vanity unit. Vinyl tiles are a popular choice and are practical.
Wall tiles
Fitting tiling half way up walls can add more character to a bathroom. The style enables homeowners to choose a bold design, without worrying about it appearing too overpowering, the bathroom experts said.
Feature walls
Feature walls can be a good choice for helping to showcase walk-in showers. They can also provide a good back-drop for freestanding baths.
Homeowners should avoid tiles which feature busy patterns or designs, said Tap Warehouse.
Patterned Tiles
According to Tap Warehouse, tiles which incorporate designs of lily pads and scintilla have been popular choices this year, with their geometric patterns in particular creating a dramatic affect.
The bathroom experts suggested exploring the use of bright patterned tile feature walls to emphasis a bath or shower.
Scallop Tiles
Scallop tiles can prove an effective choice for achieving a dramatic, yet tasteful design. Also known as penny tiles, they can help to make the bathroom look fresh.
