GADSDEN, Alabama — A workplace shooting in Albertville early Tuesday left two people dead and two others wounded.

An employee of Mueller Co., a water distribution company, opened fire on coworkers at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at a plant, police chief Jamie Smith said. The suspect, who has not been identified, left the scene in a vehicle.

The two injured people were taken a hospital, Smith said. Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.

“It is with a heavy heart that I report to you a shooting that occurred early this morning,” Smith said in a press release. “For an unknown reason, an employee of the industry began firing a weapon at fellow employees.”

Albertville, located in northern Alabama, is the largest city in Marshall County and is 62 miles northeast from Birmingham.

Boaz Police Department and Marshall County sheriff’s deputies were on the scene to assist, as detectives continued to process the scene and gather information.

“Everything humanly possible is being done at this time to locate the person responsible,” Smith said.

Smith said he expects more information to be made available at a press conference later Tuesday.

Mueller Co., which is headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has 11 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
