Baking soda and vinegar are two of the handiest household items to have around – not just for cooking, they double up well as some of the most effective household cleaners. Baking soda and vinegar work even better when put together, and can work on even the toughest household problems like limescale.

Also known as hard water stains, mineral deposits, and mineral buildup, limescale is a chalky white residue that forms around areas that commonly come into contact with water.

You’re therefore likely to find limescale around taps, toilets, inside your kettle and on your shower head.

But the toilet is perhaps one of the worst of these – not only does it see a lot of use, but it has standing water in it almost constantly.

The toilet is an area of the home that requires regular cleaning, as residue and enzymes quickly accumulate on the toilet surface, leaving unattractive discoloured stains – as well as generally being unhygienic.

While it’s true there are a whole host of commercial cleaning products that can help you remove limescale from the toilet bowl, there’s no need to spend money on them when the solution is probably already tucked away in your kitchen cupboard.

Many high street cleaners contain harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment, and some of them can be pretty pricey too.

Instead, use a combination of vinegar and baking soda, which will clean, disinfect and deodorize the toilet.

How do I clean my toilet with baking soda and vinegar?

Pour one cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl and swish it around with a toilet brush, being sure to give the sides a good scrub.

When done, let it sit for about one minute.

Next, add one cup of baking soda to the toilet, being sure to cover the sides of the bowl and not just letting all of it get into the water at the bottom.

Then, let the solution sit for about 10 minutes.

Once done, use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the bowl.

Be sure to get the solution on any stains that may be sitting just above the water line to get the cleanest finish.

Next, leave the solution again and let it sit for another 30 minutes or so.

At the end of this time, if any stains remain, you can scrub with a stiffer brush.

Finally, flush to rinse away the solution, and your toilet should be looking as good as new.
