NYC mayor Bill de Blasio throws shade at Hawks’ Trae Young: ‘Stop hunting for fouls, Trae’

Trae Young quieted a crowd of 15,000 at Madison Square Garden with a game-winning floater on Sunday night in Game 1 of the first round against the New York Knicks. 

But by Tuesday, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio found some words to go back at Young. De Blasio criticized the Atlanta Hawks star's tendency to draw fouls by driving past defenders and then stopping on a dime to initiate contact from behind. 

"Message to Trae Young on behalf of the people of New York City and anyone who cares about playing basketball the right way: stop hunting for fouls, Trae," the mayor said. 

De Blasio referenced Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash's disapproving comments about Young's tactics (although Nash drew similar calls during his playing days) and offered a pun to cap off his message.

"That hawk's not going to fly in New York City," said de Blasio, who was wearing a Knicks hat despite donning a Nets jersey last week. "Play the game the right way. See if you can win. I think the Knicks are going to teach you a lesson."
