PIP payments are split into daily living and mobility parts, with eligible claimants potentially receiving both depending on the severity of their condition. The weekly rate for the daily living part of PIP is either £59.70 or £89.15.
Mobility part payments will be either £23.60 or £562.25 per week.
This means eligible recipients could receive up to £151.40 per week from PIP.
To receive the daily living part of pip a claimant will need help more than half of the time with certain day-to-day activities.
This can include dressing, reading and communicating.

Additionally, if a person has problems preparing or eating food they could be eligible for support.
These kinds of conditions will likely be assessed by the DWP when an initial claim is put through.
To make a claim for PIP, a person can apply over the phone or through the post.
When calling, a person will need to have their contact and personal details, banking information and hospital details ready.

When a claim is put through, the following process will take place:
- The claimant will be sent a “How your disability affects you” form
- The claimant will then need to fill in the form using the notes provided
- The form will then be returned to DWP and they’ll start processing the claim. Claimants have 28 days to send the form back
- Should more information be needed, an independent health professional will send the claimant a letter inviting them to an assessment over the phone. Claimants will be asked questions about how their condition(s) affects their daily life
- Claimants will then get a letter telling them whether they’ll get PIP or not and how much they’ll get. They’ll also be informed of when they’ll be paid and how they’ll be reviewed going forward
Should a claimant disagree with a decision, they’ll be able to challenge it under mandatory reconsideration rules.
This can be done if a claimant thinks the office dealing with the claim made a mistake or they simply want the decision looked at again.
It should be noted that some decisions cannot be reconsidered and others will go straight to an official appeal.
Mandatory reconsideration needs to be requested within one month of the decision date.
Should a claimants personal circumstances change during the claiming process they will need to contact the PIP enquiry line asap.
This needs to be done as the changes could impact whats’s paid out and the following alterations must be reported:
- The claimants personal details change, for example your name, address or doctor
- The help needed or condition changes
- The condition has worsened and they’re not expected to live more than six months
- They go into hospital or a care home
- They go abroad
- They’re imprisoned or held in detention
