With winter nearly upon us and the temperature dropping, many may struggle to pay their electricity bills this year. But if you claim certain Government benefits or have a low income, you may be entitled to a discount on your energy bills from the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

What is the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

Depending on your personal circumstances, you can get £140 off your electricity bill this winter with the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

A number of energy suppliers are part of the scheme, but criteria differs depending on the supplier.

A full list of energy suppliers taking part in the Warm Home Discount Scheme can be found on the Government website.

Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

Known as the “core group”, you may qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

Known as the “broader group”, you may also be eligible for the support if you’re on a low income, and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme.

If you get certain means-tested benefits, you may also be eligible for the discount.

MoneySavingExpert states on its website: “This scheme gives those eligible £140 off energy bills.

“If you were receiving the main element of the pension credit benefit on 5 Jul 2020, you get it automatically (provided your energy supplier is part of the scheme).

“You should get a letter and if you need assistance or to confirm your details, the helpline’s now open.

“If you’re on means-tested benefits such as income support or income-based jobseeker’s allowance, you must apply.”

How do you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, the Government website explains you should receive a letter detailing how to apply for a discount under the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

The website states: “You’ll receive a letter between October and December 2020 telling you how to get the discount if you qualify.

“Your letter will say if you need to call a helpline by 26 February 2021 to confirm your details.

“Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill by 31 March 2021.”

You should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline if you think you are eligible for the “core group” and did not get a letter.

Details on the helpline are listed on the Government’s dedicated webpage for the scheme HERE.

If you are considered part of the “broad group”, you should check with your supplier if you might be eligible for the discount.

Your supplier should then give you further details on how to apply directly.
