Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, has tasked the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) with delivering the new scheme, intended to recruit thousands into work roles. From today, people will have the opportunity to apply for one of many new roles created as Work Coaches. The positions are being offered by the Department for Work and Pensions to help many people who may currently be out of work.

The plan is part of a commitment made by the government department to double the number of Work Coaches to 27,000 by March 2021.

It is hoped the thousands of Work Coaches will boost support for jobseekers, some of whom will be looking to get back into work after unemployment due to COVID-19.

And the increase in Work Coaches is also designed to help boost the economy, which suffered a hit due to the lockdown crisis.

The DWP plans to enact a rapid recruitment plan, which will see 4,500 Work Coaches in place by October 2020.

It then hopes to roll out the scheme further, with 9,000 additional Work Coaches by March of next year.

Those in the new positions will be tasked with helping the government deliver some of its new flagship programmes.

This will include the Kickstart Scheme, into which the government has invested £2billion, designed to help young people on benefits get into six-month long professional roles.

Mims Davies, the Minister for Employment, has commented on the work coach scheme.

She said: “Getting Britain back into work is key to our national recovery and our DWP Work Coaches are on the frontline of this effort – boosting their numbers means we can build back stronger.

“Our Work Coaches not only deliver financial support to millions of claimants across the country, but take time to listen, encourage, advise and ensure everyone has access to the best support available – helping those facing a tough time get back on their feet sooner.

“If you are someone who cares about your community and are keen to take on a fresh role helping others, then you can make a real difference by becoming a Work Coach and I want you to join our team today.”

Elsewhere, Mr Johnson has also spearheaded the charge to get Britons in existing work roles back into the workplace.

In March, the country was forced into a nationwide lockdown due to a surge in coronavirus cases and deaths.

In an address, the Prime Minister was forced to announce the closure of all but essential businesses to stop the spread of the virus.

For a number of weeks, Britons were told to “stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives”.

However, as the country appears to be getting to grips with a new normal, businesses have been permitted to open again.

And the government has now stressed the need to return to standard working life as much as possible.

Speaking at a People’s Prime Minister’s Questions in July, Mr Johnson said: “I do want people to start to go back to work now if you can.

“But remember to obey the guidance, because that is the way also to save lives.

“For most people who can go back to work, my message now would be that if you can go back to work, then, provided your company’s obeying the guidelines, provided it’s safe, then you should go back to work.”
