PIP bank holiday payments 2020: What day will my PIP be paid?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a welfare benefit in the UK. PIP is paid every four weeks, but what happens if your next payment date falls on a Bank Holiday? Express.co.uk has the answer.

How is PIP paid?

PIP is normally paid every four weeks, and all claimants get paid on the same date.

Once you have applied, you will receive a decision letter to tell you the date of your first payment, as well as the day of the week you will usually be paid on.

You will be paid every four weeks from that date on the same day of the week.

You’ll be asked for bank, building society or credit union account details when you claim.

You can only get paid in a different way if you have problems opening or managing an account.

What if my PIP is due to be paid on a Bank Holiday?

Your decision letter tells you which day of the week you’ll usually be paid on, and it is never a Saturday or Sunday.

If your payment date is on a bank holiday, you will usually be paid on the working day before the bank holiday.

The next Bank Holiday falls on Monday, August 31.

If you are due to be paid on this date, you should receive the payment on Friday 28 August instead.

Has PIP gone up this year?

The PIP rate went up in April 2020 and is split into two parts: the daily living part, and the mobility part.

You’ll get the higher daily living part if you have a terminal illness and are not expected to live more than six months.

You may get the daily living part if you need help more than half of the time with things like:

  • preparing or eating food
  • washing, bathing and using the toilet
  • dressing and undressing
  • reading and communicating
  • managing your medicines or treatments
  • making decisions about money
  • engaging with other people

The rate of the mobility part depends on your needs, and whether or not you need help going out or moving around.

Whether you get one or both of these and how much you can claim depends on how severely your health condition or disability affects you.

In 2019 the standard daily living rate was £58.70, but this has risen to £59.70.

The enhanced daily living rate has also increased, from £87.65 to £89.15.The mobility part has also been boosted this year, for both the standard rate and enhanced rate.

In 2019 the standard mobility rate was £23.20, but the 2020 rate is just 40 pence higher at £23.60.

The enhanced mobility rate has risen from £61.20 to £62.25.

Who is eligible for PIP?

To be eligible for PIP you need to be aged between 16 and your State Pension age.

You must also:
• find it hard to do everyday tasks or get around because of a physical or mental condition – you can make a claim whether you get help from another person or not
• have found these things hard for three months and expect it to continue for another nine months
• usually be living in England, Scotland or Wales when you apply
• have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least two years – unless you’re a refugee or an immediate family member of a refugee

How do I apply for PIP?

You can make a new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claim by calling the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Someone else can call on your behalf, but you’ll need to be with them when they call.

Before you ring, you will nee the following information:
• your contact details, for example telephone number
• your date of birth
• your National Insurance number – this is on letters about tax, pensions and benefits
• your bank or building society account number and sort code
• your doctor or health worker’s name, address and telephone number
• dates and addresses for any time you’ve spent abroad, in a care home or hospital

You can also claim PIP via post.

You can get a form to send information by post (although this can delay the decision on your claim).
