75 Percent of Millennial Women Now Believe President Trump Is Racist

A new survey conducted by Cosmopolitan found that 75 percent of women ages 18 to 35 in the United States believe President Donald Trump is racist.

The same survey, which polled more than 1,100 nationally representative young women from all across the country, also found that 57 percent of respondents think Trump is the worst president we’ve ever had in our country’s history and that 69 percent do not feel confident in his ability to lead the American people. Seventy-two percent say that Trump’s policies have not improved their lives.

This news comes amid the coronavirus pandemic and national turmoil as communities all around the world protest police brutality against Black people, specifically the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery.

The protests began in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 26 after a Minneapolis Police Department officer killed Floyd, an unarmed Black man, by kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. The protests first called for the police officer’s arrest but have since become a widespread uprising against the systemic violence Black people face in America.

The president has responded to the protests by labeling protestors “thugs,” chastising his opponents on Twitter, and calling on governors and mayors to “get tough” with the protestors. On Monday night, Washington, D.C. police reinforced by National Guard troops deployed tear gas and rubber bullets on peaceful protestors near the White House outside St. John’s Church so Trump could make a speech and pose for photos.

Many of Cosmopolitan’s survey respondents decried his handling of the protests and sent in comments about his leadership.

“It’s complete hypocrisy,” wrote one respondent. “He called white protestors who marched into the capitol with guns to protest stay-at-home orders in my home state of Michigan ‘very good people,’ while on the other hand, he called the peaceful Black protestors in Minneapolis ‘thugs.’” Another respondent said, “He just declared war.”

“Racism has always existed, but he has FUELED it,” one survey taker wrote.

Trump has been tweeting about the protests, making claims like “LAW & ORDER!” and calling for “overwhelming force.” Twitter recently decided to issue fact-checking labels on two of the president’s tweets, warning readers to “get the facts.” Although only 16 percent of respondents to Cosmopolitan’s survey think Twitter should hold Trump accountable for his tweets (50 percent said this is Congress’ responsibility), 64 percent of young women think Trump spreads lies through his tweets. Twenty-three percent said they do not read his tweets.

As the country continues to fight COVID-19 and the impacts of systemic racism, young women are also looking toward the 2020 presidential election in November, which, oh yeah, is happening this year too. Per our survey, 71 percent of young women do not plan to vote for Trump. Sixty-six percent said they feel hopeless about the state of American politics.
