Unfortunately, the number one space in homes ants are attracted to are kitchens as they enter homes in search of food.

However, this is the last place households want company from pests. In order to control the problem an infections first needs to be removed.

Struggling with an ant infestation, one woman took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page to ask for some advice.

Josie Adams said: “Not strictly cleaning but wondering if anyone is clued up in pest control and can advise? 

“Ants! I’ve suffered from several ant infections outside in my garden and them getting indoors for the last couple of summers.

“Thought I’d solved it last year but have come to realise that there are multiple holes in the mortar of the brickwork in which they have colonised. 

“I’ve sprayed loads of white vinegar and poured hot water where I could see them coming out of the walls. How on earth can I get rid of them properly?

“I’m half tempted to seal all the holes outside that I can find but worried that I’m only going to make matters worse if I trap a million ants in a cavity in the wall and encourage them to burrow indoors. 

“My walls are rubbish and are single-layer brick (old stable conversion) so don’t want to cause myself more issues if I don’t deal with it properly.”

While some group members suggested that Josie buy commercial sprays dedicated to killing ants, many suggested that she use a product she might already own – talcum powder.

Lisa Ginnelly wrote: “The only thing I found that worked for me is baby talcum powder.”

Lynsey Mason said: “Honestly I was the same I tried and spent a fortune on everything. 

“Cheap talcum powders poured around your home is by far the best thing to properly get rid of ants and cheapest by far. I don’t know how or why, but we haven’t had none at all since.”

The talcum powder works by breaking the ants’ pheromone trail. Also, the powder gets absorbed through their skin and clogs up their airways, killing them off for good.

Talcum powder is cheap to buy for those who don’t already own a bottle of it. It retails for £1 in Poundland and £1.25 in Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.
