A fresh grease stain should not be put in the washing machine straight away as this could set it and cause it to be permanent. Older grease stains can be harder to remove so may require more care and attention. Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their household staples for removing grease stains from white clothes.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household and cleaning problems.

On one such group, Facebook user Diane Pearson asked: “Hi, I went to put a clean white t-shirt on and noticed two grease stains.

“Any idea how to get these out? Is my top salvageable? Thanks in advance.”

The most suggested solution was to use washing up liquid either by itself or with bicarbonate of soda.

Samantha Russell replied: “Rub neat washing up liquid then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in too. Leave for an hour then wash as normal.”

Susan Findlay said: “Rub neat washing up liquid into it making sure it penetrates right through. Leave for a while and wash as usual.”

Storm Townsend commented: “If you’re talking food grease/oil I dampen area and put straight dishwashing liquid on it.

“Give it a bit of a rub and throw in the washing machine. If you’re talking car/machine grease – I don’t know.”

Lisa Hughes wrote: “Rub washing up liquid into them then wash.” Dawn Burridge also suggested: “Washing up liquid might work.”

Most households have washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda, however, those that don’t can buy it relatively cheaply from local supermarkets or online.

Charlotte Medlock said: “I use Elbow Grease spray on clothes with grease stains. The results are miraculous! I’d recommend that.”

Donna Snelling wrote: “Napisan is amazing on whites. I would rub washing liquid first then wash with Napisan.”

Margaret Mulligan suggested: “Melt a dishwashing capsule in boiling water and steep the top overnight. Should do the trick.”

Janet Whitworth said: “Elbow grease spray.” Susan White agreed and suggested: “Elbow Grease spray or neat washing up liquid.”
