Former DIY SOS builder Mark Millar shared his tips and tricks for renovating kitchens and bathrooms on his new Channel 5 show. Mark, who has over 30 years of experience in the building trade, helped homeowners transform the most important rooms in their homes on any budget. This week, Mark helped homeowners Chris and Celie create a dream country cottage bathroom on a £2,000 budget in their leafy Leicestershire home.
They bought their dream cottage for around £260,000 nine months ago and have been doing it up “from top to bottom” ever since.
Celie dreamt of a large, luxurious bathroom with a “modern country cottage” theme.
Their £2,000 budget meant that the couple had to get their hands dirty, which led Celie trying her hand at tiling.
Tiling is no easy feat, so Mark shared his tips with Celie who wanted to tile her own shower.
Mark set up an “imaginary bathroom wall” where he showed Celie how to lay 150mm bathroom tiles.
Mark said: “Tiling isn’t that hard and doing it ourselves can save £30 per square metre.
“All we need is tiles, spacers, adhesive and a notched trowel.
“Work off a true horizontal line near the bottom, draw a centre line on the wall and work away from that.

“This way, any different sized tiles are out of sight in the corners.
“Spread about a square metre of adhesive with the flat edge of the trowel, comb it with the notched edge to make the grooves.
“This allows any air to escape when you press the tile into the adhesive.
“Place the next tile, the insert the spacers between them. Then, wipe clean and leave to dry before you grout.”
Celie tried her hand at tiling and said she didn’t think it was easy.
Mark said tilers can charge around £140 to £180 per day to tile a bathroom.
The DIY expert said Celie doing the shower herself is a “significant saving”.
While Celie was tiling the bathroom wall, Chris spotted that she had made a “classic beginner’s mistake”.
Celie didn’t measure whether the tiles were square with one another.
“Not checking the wall tiles are level is a very common DIY mistake,” Mark added.
In the end, Celie managed to get back on track and created a stunning wall with white, metro tiles.
Celie and Chris’ finished bathroom was stunning with a free-standing roll top bath, walk-in shower and panels made from wallpaper.
The next episode of Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms with Mark Millar will air at 7pm on May 11 on Channel 5
