If the heatwave has had you tossing and turning this week, it might be time to give your mattress a clean. While changing the bed sheets can be enough to make it feel fresh, mattresses are often forgotten about when it comes to the list of housework. But cleaning the mattress is even more important in the summer when those slightly yellowed stains appear.
Sweat stains on mattresses are perfectly normal – after all, you’re hopefully spending around eight hours a night in bed so there’s plenty of time for it to build up.
Synthetic bed sheets can make you sweat more, while memory foam mattresses have also been known to make you feel hotter as the material is less breathable.
But while you might be feeling hot under the covers – especially in the heatwave that’s blasted the UK this week – it’s not just sweat that can leave patches on your mattress.
The oils from your skin can leave a mark, and of course there might be the odd stain from spilling your morning cup of tea too.
So how can you get rid of pesky stains and clean your mattress properly?
One cleaning fanatic has revealed how they got rid of sweat stains on their white mattress in just ten minutes.
The tip was posted in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook, which has hundreds of thousands of members.
The group was made for fans of cleaning influencer Mrs Hinch – real name Sophie Hinchliffe – who found Instagram fame after posting her top tips for cleaning the house with cheap products and even homemade solutions.
Her fans, also known as Hinchers, regularly post their own tips or ask for advice in the group.

The Mrs Hinch fan shared a before and after snap of her handiwork, revealing that they’d seen another post about cleaning a mattress and decided to give it a go.
“I saw a lady cleaned up her mattress with Flash with bicarbonate of soda,” they wrote.
“I only have Astonish so I thought I would give it a go.
“Sprayed on sweat stain, left for ten mins and wiped down with a dry cloth… I actually used a duster as my microfibre clothes were in the wash. Amazing results.”
The photo showed a distinct yellowish stain that had completely vanished in the “after” image.
The cleaning fan used the Astonish Fabric Stain Remover Spray, which they picked up for just £1 in a local store.
However, prices vary at different stockists which include The Range, Wilko, Home Bargains, Poundland and Dunelm, according to the original poster.
Fellow fans were quick to comment on the post and revealed that they swear by the budget spray.
“I’ve got this spray, and I can honestly say it’s the best stain remover I have ever used!” wrote one user.
“I use this on my carpet before using the cleaner, comes up better than any solution,” said another.
The product also has plenty of rave reviews on the Astonish website, proving it works well on other fabrics too.
“I thought I’d ruined a white top with the pollen from Lily stamens. My whole left sleeve was covered. I sprayed a couple of times and left to soak. Added the oxi powder to the wash and to my amazement came out clean,” wrote one happy customer.
Other Mrs Hinch fans have also shared their tips for cleaning a mattress in the Facebook group, including hoovering it regularly to get rid of dust.
