Jeff Bezos tells racist he’s ‘the kind of customer I’m happy to lose’
Jeff Bezos hit back at an Amazon customer who sent him a slur-laced email in response to Amazon’s public support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Bezos on Sunday posted a screenshot on his Instagram page of the email he received, which used the N-word several times and warned that the anti-racist stance “will ruin your company.”
“I canceled my order and I know for a fact that I won’t be the only one,” the customer, whose first name was Dave and last name was redacted, wrote. “Maintain your stance and we will watch your profits decline and laugh about it.”
Bezos replied: “Dave, you’re the kind of customer I’m happy to lose.”
The $150 billion-dollar-man wrote that he posted the racist screed because it was important to make hate visible.
“There have been a number of sickening but not surprising responses in my inbox since my last post,” Bezos said. “This sort of hate shouldn’t be allowed to hide in the shadows.”
A day earlier on Saturday, Bezos had shared an email from another angry customer complaining about Amazon’s support of the social movement, attempting to explain why she was wrong for emailing him “ALL LIVES MATTER.”
“I have to disagree with you,” he said. “‘Black lives matter’ doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter.”
“Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system,” he went on.
“I have a 20-year-old son, and I simply don’t worry that he might be choked to death while being detained one day. It’s not something I worry about. Black parents can’t say the same.”
Shares of Amazon were up 1 percent Monday morning, at $2,509.05.
