Cupboard staple ‘dissolves limescale’ from shower heads, claims Mrs Hinch fans
Limescale is a white substance that’s often found in or on metal machinery where water is involved.
The mineral deposits appear when the hard water is heated and evaporates. The limescale will then form and continue to build up if it’s not removed.
Getting rid of limescale can be difficult, especially on certain materials, especially shower heads, but it’s possible to do so without resorting to chemicals.
Fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, AKA Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their natural 99p solution for banishing limescale from shower heads.
On one Facebook group called Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, social media user Susan Myers, asked: “Could anyone suggest how to clean a shower head? Mine has gone black in the holes where the water comes out. I’ve tried bleach but it didn’t work.”

The post was inundated with responses but the most suggested solution was to use a natural remedy – white vinegar.
Some people suggested either using white vinegar by itself or mixed with baking soda or water.
Maureen Beckett Morgan said: “Put the head in a plastic bag with water, white vinegar and a limescale liquid of some sort.”
Sharon Kardosh replied: “I did mine recently with white vinegar. I tried the branded stuff first thinking it would be easier but it didn’t work. Is the a top fixed head or one one a hose?

“The hose bit, I put a jug of white vinegar in the shower and stood the head bit in it, came up clean really quickly. I was totally amazed.”
Vanessa Rodway commented: “White vinegar in a polythene bag wrapped around the shower head with an elastic band. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes and it dissolves limescale.”
Gloria Clarkson-Wanders posted: “I put mine in a plastic bag with Vinegar. Cleans limescale and black gunk.”

Caroline Gilley Thomas suggested: “Fill a food bag with bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar and put the shower head in and tie it for two hours. It should come out lovely.”
White vinegar can be purchased online or from most local supermarkets. Asda sells white vinegar for 99p and Ocado sells it for £2.
