‘Best’ method to clean your entire oven in four ‘easy-to-follow’ steps
Express uses baking soda to remove grease from oven racks
It’s super easy to ignore and simply close the oven door and forget about the mess, but it has a terrible roll-on effect.
Months can go by before the full horror of the situation is fully realised, but by then households are faced with layers of hard baked-on grease and grime.
Luckily Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic and General, has shared the “best way” to clean this entire appliance properly in “four easy-to-follow steps”
He said: “Whilst we all clean our kitchens on a regular basis, the laborious task of oven cleaning is sometimes overlooked.
“Cleaning off all of the food, grease and bacteria can not only make your oven sparkle but also help avoid the need for an oven repair.”

1. Remove and soak the oven racks
The expert claimed that “the best way” to clean racks is by removing them from the oven as this saves from being crouched on the floor.
When the racks have been removed, take them outside and coat them in an oven cleaner. Ian said that households can then leave them overnight in the oven cleaner. However, not everyone has an outdoor space.
In this scenario, cover the racks in an oven cleaner but scrub it off quickly after and then soak it in washing-up liquid overnight as this reduces the fumes in the home.
The expert said: “The next day the racks should just need a quick wipe over to remove any leftover grime and then they can be dried.”

2. Remove any burnt food
Before getting to the scrubbing part, wipe away any recent spillages. Then apply the cleaner of choice to the burnt areas and leave it to soak in the solution.
This could be a combination of baking soda and white vinegar. Once done get to scrubbing and wiping away stubborn burnt food.
A top tip is to use a scraper on larger pieces of food. Also, make sure to not get any cleaning product on the oven’s heating element.
3. Clean the inside of the door
When selecting a product to clean the oven glass door with, Ian said: “Make sure to check the product isn’t abrasive or overly strong as this can lead to cracks or shattering and mean you will need to repair your oven.”

Spray the inside oven door with the chosen solution or product and let it sit for around 20 minutes before removing it with a damp cloth. If the surface is particularly dirty, households may have to repeat this step.”
4. Wipe down the door
Cleaning the outside of your oven is very similar to cleaning windows. Spritz with a glass cleaner, wipe with a damp cloth in circular motions until all the dirt has disappeared and then buff the glass with a clean dry cloth to “remove any streaks”.
However, cleaning the oven knobs isn’t quite as easy. Households first need to remove all the knobs and soak them in either white vinegar or warm, soapy water.
Rinse them and then let them dry. After, clean the area where the knobs sit to make sure any dirt isn’t left behind. Not all knobs are removable though, so if this is the case then “spray the area down with a cleaning product of choice and get all in the nooks and crannies with a cloth, sponge or even a toothbrush”, instructed the expert.
