Blood stains can quickly become permanent on white sheets due to nosebleeds, cuts and grazes. One of the main problems with blood stains is if they are washed with hot water. Trying to remove a blood stain with hot water usually adheres the stain to the material.

With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple solution for removing blood stains from white sheets.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

On one such group, a Facebook user posted: “Don’t really want to post but I’m desperate. How can I get blood out of white sheets and clothes?

“I’ve soaked them in cold water is there anything that I can buy from Tesco/Asda to help remove the stains?”

The post was inundated with almost 100 comments from Mrs Hinch fans but the most popular suggestion was to use cold water and salt.

Kelly Rontree said: “Cold water and salt.” Louise Gibbons agreed and wrote: “Cold water and salt is good for blood.

“Maybe use some salt on the blood to use as an exfoliant and rub the sheets to try get some of the stain off.”

Tracey Ann replied: “Cold water, salt and then rinse with cold water and rub over with a bar of hand soap and wash as normal.”

Brenda Norgate suggested: “Cold salt water usually brings blood out.”

Lesley Schiavone commented: “I always soak in cold water and salt, then while it’s still wet rub a load more salt on the stain. Then I spray with Elbow Grease and wash as normal.

“Never use hot water on blood straight away, it sets it and makes it really hard to shift.”

Moira Symons suggested: “Cold, salt water then wash in bio washing powder.”

Most households own salt but for those who don’t, it can be bought from most supermarkets or online.

ASDA Table Salt costs 65p, Sainsbury’s Table Salt also costs 65p and Morrisons Table Salt costs 59p.

Other suggestions for removing blood stains from white sheets included using Pink Stuff paste, milk, Napisan, soda crystals, Milton or Elbow Grease.

Helen Arnold said: “Pink Stuff paste. Scrub it with cold water on both sides and leave to soak.”

Siân Garton commented: “I’ve always used milk. It dilutes it enough to wash straight out.”

Lynsey Oneil wrote: “Napisan is the best! I used it for terry towelling nappies.”

Emma Louise Daglish suggested: “Long, cold wash with soda crystals and biological washing powder or liquid.”

Joanne Harvey said: “Soak them in Milton or a supermarket brand sterilising solution overnight then wash as normal.”
