Cleaning the microwave is a chore many people put off, but cleaning expert Lindsay from Instagram’s @dazlincleaning has a handy tip which does the job in “five minutes”. According to Lindsay, the hack is so efficient you won’t need to spend ages scrubbing away at burnt-on food, as it should dissolve away in the process.
However, instead of reaching for an expensive cleaning product, Lindsay recommends using two items you may already have tucked away in your kitchen cupboard.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “If your microwave needs a clean pour a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in a bowl and cover it with cling film. Stab a few holes in the top of the cling film and turn the microwave on for five minutes.”
White vinegar is often recommended for its multi-purpose cleaning uses around the home thanks to its high levels of acetic acid. Furthermore, the household product is a cheap option, available for as little as 40p from supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s.

The acidity of white vinegar means it can tackle microwave dirt and grime easily. Combined with steam from heating the water, cleaning the microwave with white vinegar makes it less of a chore.
To loosen up any particularly stubborn dirt and grime, leave the door closed for an extra minute after the microwave has finished running to allow the steam to get circulate further.
Once the vinegar and water solution has had time to steam, carefully remove the bowl of water from your microwave. The solution will be very hot, so it is a good idea to use an oven glove or mitt at this point.

If your microwave has removable components, such as a turntable, now is the time to take them out. Lindsay then recommends using a microfibre cloth to wipe down the dirt. She recommends using the Let It Shine On & On microfibre cloth by Marigold, which can be purchased for £3.59.
“Give your microwave a wipe down and the dirt should come away easily now,” she said. Begin wiping from the roof of the appliance, working your way down the sides and door.
Any burnt-on grime may need a little extra elbow grease. Then wipe the turntable over with the cleaning sponge and dry it off with a clean dry cloth. Use a clean cloth to buff the microwave dry before replacing all of the removable parts.
Why is white vinegar recommended for household cleaning?
White vinegar has many benefits when it comes to cleaning around the home. As well as being inexpensive to buy from most stores, white vinegar also contains no harsh chemicals or fumes and works well to remove odours instead of simply masking them. It is also a great environmentally-friendly product.
The acidic nature of vinegar is so powerful it can dissolve mineral deposits, dirt, grease, and grime. It’s also strong enough to kill some forms of bacteria. Vinegar can be used to clean stainless steel pots and pans, your kitchen sink, flooring, stovetops, bathroom taps and fixtures and the inside of your kettle.
Although it can be used on its own for stubborn grime, typically vinegar should be combined with water. Though white vinegar is a versatile natural cleaning agent, before using it on certain surfaces, it is a good idea to test it on a small patch.
