Best method to remove rust from shower using popular sauce

On a Facebook cleaning group, social media user Jayne Winch asked for tips on how to remove rust from a metal shower caddy. “I have used elbow grease, wire pads, etc. But still lots there,” she said.

Tomato sauce

Fellow cleaning enthusiast Helena Enefer recommended using ketchup to remove the stains and using “scrunched-up foil” to rub the surface.

Another one, Liz Johnston, agreed saying: “Tomato sauce with kitchen foil into a ball,” and Diane Phillips said: “Tomato sauce and tin foil.”

Social media user Jennifer Dow backed this up saying: “Same here must try the tomato sauce tip.”

The hack involves lathering the rusty stainless steel with a generous layer of tomato sauce or ketchup.

Leave it for five minutes and then use kitchen paper to gently rub the marks off.

Ketchup has an acetic acid content which comes from the vinegar which is present in the sauce.

Thanks to its acid content, tomato sauce is also great for shining silverware, brass and copper.

An expert from Infinite Paving, Rowan Cripps, shared other alternatives to remove rust stains using household products.

Lemon Juice

Rowan said “this is a surprisingly effective option for small rust stains” and “for the best results, try gently soaking the surface for up to 15 minutes in lemon juice, before cleaning with a brush in a circular motion”.

This allows the lemon juice to dissolve much of the staining before you go for the scrub brush. Complete this by rinsing away the acidic residue with water.

Fizzy drinks

Fizzy drinks “are great for removing rust stains due to their high acidic content,” the expert said.

Pour the fizzy drink onto the stain and wait for it to soak for about 15 minutes, work it with a scrub brush, and rinse with water after.

Vinegar

“White vinegar is an eco-friendly way to remove rust stains” from any surface “in a practical and effective way”.

Simply spray it onto the stain and let it sit for less than an hour. Once it has penetrated the stains, scrub the surface with a stiff-bristle brush. Then, rinse it with water and let it dry.

Cleaning enthusiast Andrea Mitchison shared her experience using vinegar: “I’ve just had great success, with a really rusty horseshoe, by soaking it overnight in white vinegar with a sprinkling of Vanish.

“It came out shiny and new after brushing with a nail brush in warm soapy water. It may help you too.”

Dish soap and water

Simply using dish soap can work well to clean rust from a surface if it hasn’t been sitting there for too long.

Mix warm water with dish soap and apply it to the surface. Let it sit for a while until the dirt becomes loose and easy to remove with water. Don’t be afraid to continue this process if it requires further cleaning.

WD 40

This is made to penetrate surfaces very easily. Using WD 40 to get rid of rust stains is “as simple as giving the affected area a good spray over and then taking your wire scrubber to get down deep”.

The expert added: “WD 40 tends to work on pretty much everything straight away, meaning there’s no need for you to wait for more than a few minutes.”
