Homes Under the Hammer presenter Martin Roberts visited a home just outside of Dudley in the West Midlands. It was a two-bed semi detached house on the market for £59,000. Upon entering the home, Martin said: “So it has a nice new front door, double glazed…[the house] looks to be in a right old state, which is even more curious.

“The windows and doors actually look brand new.”

The living room was very dated and needed a complete transformation with new carpets and plastering.

It also had an old fireplace which needed to be ripped out of the home.

Martin said the window situation was “rather perplexing” because the rest of the house was in “such a state”.

To the rear of the property there was one room which could double up as a dining room and kitchen.

Upstairs, Martin said: “Bathroom is exactly where you’d hope it would be, right at the top of the stairs.

“It obviously needs a complete refurbishment but that’s no surprise there.”

The property had two double bedrooms which needed carpet laying and a lick of paint.

Who were the lucky buyers when the West Midlands home went to auction?

The house was purchased by Shakeel and Zane, for £105,500, slightly more than the asking price. He met Martin back at the property to share his plans.

Being quantity-surveying students, Shakeel said he and Zane saw a great opportunity to purchase this home as it was right opposite a hospital.

He said: “The plan is to literally rip everything out, and redo everything. That’s from electric, plumbing, it needs a new heating system.

“We’re going to try to do most of the work ourselves.”

With a budget of between £10,000 to £15,000, Shakeel and Zane had a timescale of two to three months, renovating the house as a weekend project.

Homes Under the Hammer visited the property 10 months later to see the house fully transformed.

The new kitchen had white cabinets and beige tiles with modern new appliances.

In the living room, new carpet had been placed along with new white paint and white doors.

The bathroom had been fully ripped out and a new white suite with grey tiles had been fitted.

Despite getting the work done, Shakeel explained that the pair found it hard to balance their time getting the work done due to studying full time.

The pair managed to get the work done in six months for £11,000, slightly under their original budget.

A local estate agent visited the home to share how much the property could now be worth.

The expert said: “I think if I was putting this on the market today, then I would assume it would achieve in the region of £150,000.”

The pair plan to keep this property in their portfolio to rent out.
