Is parking free on bank holidays?

BANK holidays for many of us involve trips out with family and often come with parking chaos.

Once you have found a space and unloaded your picnic the next step is to find out if your parking is free – it is a public holiday after all.

Is parking free on bank holidays?

There is no rule that says parking must be free on a bank holiday.

On Sundays, many car parks are £1 for all day parking or even free and often resident or restricted on-street spaces are open to general use.

While some places do operate Sunday rules and discount your parking on a bank holiday not all do.

Different councils have their own rules regarding Sundays and bank holidays.

Everything you need to know about private parking tickets

Even more unpredictable are private car parks with many having issues with signage or clarity on rules.

Whether private or council run, the car park or space should have signs around to tell you when it is free to leave your car.

If you are unsure, assume that normal rules apply and pay for the parking.

Paying for a day of parking is better than paying upwards of £50 for a fine if you were wrong.

Which parking restrictions are in operation on bank holidays?

Rules once again vary from place to place so if you are going anywhere on a bank holiday, check parking before you go.

Most parking restrictions are still in place such as no blocking entrances and no parking in blue badge bays.

Treat the bank holiday as a normal day unless signs are telling you rules are different.

Always check with the signage around if you are unsure, traffic wardens are likely to be around.

It is safer to be overly cautious and park as normal than risk your bank holiday being ruined with a fine.

Which parking restrictions are NOT in operation on public/bank holidays?

In some places, such as Westminster in London, you are allowed to park on single yellow lines on bank holidays.

A good rule of thumb is if the restriction apply on a Sunday then they probably apply on the bank holiday.

Resident permit holder spaces can also be used on bank holidays if the sign specifies times of operation for the bay.

If on a Sunday the resident parking is free for all to use, it is likely it will be free on a bank holiday.

If you cannot see any signs saying it is free then assume you need to pay.
