Apple has designed 11 secret iPhone models – and they could launch in WEEKS

APPLE has quietly registered a slew of mystery iPhone models that have never been announced.

A total of 11 different handsets have been listed in a filing with an Eastern European regulator – which could mean new iPhones are on the way.

Apple is known for its secrecy, so it's hard to find details about new iPhones before they launch.

But French website Consomac managed to uncover references to 11 previously undiscovered iPhone handsets.

They were tucked away in a Russian-language regulatory filing in the Eurasian Economic Commission database.

This filing was only published on Tuesday, which means a launch could be imminent.

Gadget makers have to comply with Russian laws that demand registration for any gadgets with encryption capabilities.

Apple has filed the following iPhone model numbers, all of which are running on the brand new iOS 11 software: A1920, A1921, A1984, A2097, A2098, A2099, A2101, A2103, A2104, A2105 and A2106.

None of those model numbers correspond to any existing iPhone devices.

However, a single device (like the iPhone 8) could have several different model numbers.

So while there may be 11 new numbers listed here, it's possible that these codes may only refer to a couple of smartphones.

In any case, it's the timing of this filing that is particularly important.

Companies generally only register devices with regulatory bodies very shortly before launch.

For instance, two new iPad models were registered with the EEC on February 19, only to be unveiled at an Apple event on March 27.

And in May last year, new MacBook models were registered with the EEC – and then revealed just weeks later.

Apple's next big event is the annual WWDC developer conference, scheduled for June 4 to 8.

It's entirely possible that Apple could use this event to showcase new phones.

We've already heard rumours of a cheap new iPhone SE 2, which could be Apple's biggest iPhone ever.

And Apple is tipped to be toiling away on several new phones, potentially under the iPhone 9 brand.
