You can keep all of this at bay by cleaning your bin regularly, and this doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Taking the bins out doesn’t have to be such a stinky, messy job.

Old food and rubbish will always smell, but your bins should be kept as clean as possible to ensure acceptable hygiene standards are kept.

Ideally, you should clean your bin every week when the waste collectors have picked up your rubbish or whenever you empty your indoor bins.

All you need to do to clean your bins – wheelie or otherwise – is wash and disinfect the interior with some hot water and a liquid disinfectant.

You could even use washing up liquid, which the experts at Tap Warehouse pointed out is a disinfectant.

They said: “Either grab a soapy dish sponge and use it to scrub the bin or fill the bin with hot water and washing up liquid.

“Leave it to sit for 10 minutes before pouring the water out and drying it with a cloth.”

Try to do this on a warm or sunny day to allow the bin to dry properly, otherwise mould will start to dry.

Wipe down the exterior of your bins with some antibacterial spray and paper towels.

If you want your bin to really shine, you can use some trusty white vinegar to improve the look.

The team at Tap Warehouse said: “Make a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, spray the bin, and use a dish sponge to scrub the inside and outside of the bin.”

If your bin is still smelly, there’s a really cheap and simple hack to ward off bad smells.

Before you put your bin bag in the newly-cleaned and dry bin, sprinkle some coffee grounds into the base of the bin.

Coffee grounds have quite an overpowering smell and are able to absorb and neutralise the nasty smells lingering in your bin.

Another hack is to place your bin bag edges over the top of your bin like a hat, placing the bag inside the bin.

This way you won’t have to worry about neatly tucking the edges into the bin.

If you want to get the most out of your money, you can use your coffee grounds to clean the bin as well as sprinkle them.

Coffee works wonders on grease as well, so simply place two teaspoons of the coffee onto a wet cloth and scrub away any grease or food particles in the bin.
