ButterflyMX, a startup designing smart intercoms for apartment blocks and businesses alike, has raised $35 million in a funding round backed by banking giant Stifel.

Founded in 2013 by Cyrus Claffey, ButterflyMX says it currently operates in close to 4,500 buildings throughout the US, servicing around a million residents.

Speaking to Business Insider, Claffey said e-commerce had reached a point under the pandemic in which there was "basically a Black Friday-style event every week".

The boom in e-commerce sales under COVID-19 had produced a parallel demand for smart intercoms, as residents increasingly need to manage incoming groceries and other goods. Figures suggest e-commerce giants such as Amazon racked up an extra $107 billion in revenue as those sheltering in place increased demand for home deliveries.

"Those with front-door solutions with ButterflyMX in place have been able to weather the storm more easily," he said. "And avoid the rampant rise in package theft we've seen with items being left outside your front door."

With the new funding, raised with the backing of the likes of Stifel, Volition Capital, and Egis Capital, the firm plans add 80 new employees to its current 125-person headcount.
