Domino’s Pizza scam warning: Fast food text scam spreads on WhatsApp

Domino’s Pizza is particularly popular, and has been met with high demand for delivery during the lockdown period where many restaurants have remained closed. However, it appears cybercriminals are taking advantage of unsuspecting Britons’ desire for a bargain to potentially steal highly sensitive information. A website link has recently circulated on the popular social media platform, WhatsApp, offering free pizza during the lockdown.

The message, which claims to be from Domino’s Pizza, is in fact a phishing scam which seems to prompt customers to enter personal details which could be harvested by the criminals behind the site.

The text many Britons have received reads: “Dominos is giving away 2 FREE Large Pizzas per family to everyone this week to support the nation during Corona Pandemic.

This link prompts users to fill in a survey based on their favourite pizza topping and their local Domino’s branch.

It informs those who complete the survey they will receive their pizza voucher within two days, however, they can only do so by forwarding the message on to a certain number of people.

This is just another part of the elaborate scheme, which aims to keep the scam circulating and draw in as many victims as possible.

The website also redirects users to other surveys and websites which could potentially steal their personal details.

In phishing schemes, these details could be used by fraudsters for criminal purposes, and could potentially stand to lose Britons hundreds, and even thousands, through their bank details.

One woman took to Twitter to alert people of the scam, writing: “Beware of this scam on WhatsApp – and NOT from Domino’s.

“It offers free pizza if you forward to 10 people and when you do, it tells you you’ve only forwarded two and need 20 more.

“I just spent five minutes sending and then having to delete. I’m furious!”

And another wrote: “A brand new Domino’s Pizza club SMS just spotted today, watch out all you pizza lovers. Don’t send it on!”

Domino’s has responded to the scam website online, confirming it is illegitimate.

Their Twitter account wrote: “Regrettably, this is not a legitimate Domino’s offer, and we apologise for any disappointment caused.

“We have made Facebook aware, but we would also recommend reporting it as a fake page.”

Similar scams have been on the rise during lockdown, attempting to exploit Britons.

All four major supermarkets have been hit with similar issues, with the most recent scam purporting to be Domino’s even including similar phraseology to previous supermarket fraud.

And even HMRC scams involving tax refunds and government schemes to combat coronavirus have sadly been spread around the country through social media, text and phone calls.

Citizens Advice has urged Britons who have fallen victim to, or spotted, a scam to report this immediately.

All details of any scam should be gathered including contact details and any information shared.

Any scam can be reported to Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud, which will be forwarded on to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.
