How to claim PIP successfully
How much you can be paid from PIP depends on how difficult it is for you to carry out certain activities, such as preparing food and drink, dressing and undressing, showering and moving around. PIP comes in two parts – a daily living component and a mobility component. You may be able to claim one or both components of the benefit depending on your circumstances.
How to claim PIP successfully
To begin your PIP claim, you should call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 0800 917 2222.
They will ask you for basic personal information before sending a claim form to your address via post.
Next thing you should do is fill in the claim form. If you need help with this, you can contact the DWP or your local Age UK.

Your claim will then be assessed by a healthcare professional and you might have a face-to-face assessment.
You will then receive a score based on how much help you need, which will, in turn, affect how much PIP you will receive.
After this, you will be informed of the decision of your claim and can challenge it if it is rejected.
If you are told that your PIP claim is unsuccessful, or if your situation has changed you can challenge the decision within one month of the date the decision was made. This is called ‘mandatory reconsideration’.
If you are still not happy with the outcome of the reconsideration, you can appeal again within one month of receiving the decision letter.
Government statistics show that more than half of PIP decisions are changed after mandatory reconsideration or appeal.
For more information, you can contact the DWP or Citizens Advice Bureau on how to make a reconsideration appeal.
Am I eligible to claim PIP?
To be eligible for PIP you must be aged 16 and over, and have been born after April 8, 1948.
You must also have a long-term disability and health condition and need help or support with daily living, mobility, or both.
Claimants must have needed this support for at least the three months prior to claiming, and can expect the same needs to continue for a further nine months.
You must have lived in the UK for at least two off the last three years, and claimants must live in Britain currently.
Making a claim for PIP can take up to four months, but claims will be processed much faster for the terminally ill.
